What is Body Sugaring?
Sugaring is one of the most ancient forms of hair removal, dating back to early Egypt. This method has made it’s way into the modern world of hair removal and is quickly becoming the preferred form. The sugaring technique employs the use of a sugar paste or gel made from sugar, lemon juice and water. This substance has a wax-like consistency and color, but without the sticky resins, chemicals, preservatives and dyes that conventional “strip” or “hard” wax contains.

How does it work?
The sugar paste can be used warmed or at room temperature. With gentle application to the area of hair to be removed, the paste is then molded against the direction of hair growth and removed in the direction of hair growth to prevent inflammation. Leaving hairless, exfoliated and smooth skin. The treatment contributes to exfoliation of surface texture as well providing an instant glow to the treated body and face.

Sugaring vs. Waxing
Sugaring and waxing are very different. The sugaring paste is applied in the opposite direction of the hair growth and removed with it, whereas waxing is applied with the direction of the hair and removed against it. Traditional waxing uses either muslin strips or hardens on the skin before removing it. Wax removal can often be hot and harsh to result in burned skin or hair breakage. When the hair breaks under the skin’s surface, the hair that grows in thereafter gets trapped, causing an ingrown hair that can lead to pain and infection. Another difference between body sugaring and waxing is that the sugar only adheres to the hair follicle or dead skin cells and never to live skin cells.

Commonly used wax substances, (because they contain resins) stick to live skin cells, causing not only pain with removal, but can lift the live skin! This results in a burn, usually scabbing over—definitely not a pretty result!
The sugar paste on the other hand, never adheres to live skin, only to dead skin cells. The mixture permeates deep into the hair follicle, effectively removing the hair and the inner root sheath (the white, waxy bulb you find at the end of your hair shaft). This removal is a gentle and effective exfoliating treatment that leaves your skin silky, sweet and smooth after the process. Sugaring is excellent for sensitive skin types.

Pros and Cons of Sugaring
Pros:
  • Helps reduce the risk of ingrown hairs
  • Gently exfoliates while improving the appearance of skin tone and texture
  • Removes only dead skin, not live skin. Waxing removes live skin which can cause burning or scabbing.
  • Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin
  • Sugar paste is all-natural and hypoallergenic, it is NOT made from any petroleum products or chemicals
  • Results last up to 6 weeks and if performed regularly, can lead to permanent hair removal
  • Hair can be removed at 1/8th inch long, only 7-10 days of growth needed which is half the time required for traditional waxing
  • Any pigment or type of hair can be sugared, unlike other hair removal techniques which may only address certain types of hair
  • The mixture is water-soluble, so it washes off with water if any residue is left behind
  • Sugaring is eco-friendly, cost efficient and biodegradable. It requires no strips, popsicles sticks for applying or any other waste that is necessary for conventional waxing procedures
  • Sanitary and individually portioned, no chance of double dipping sticks
  • Does not need to be heated like wax so will never burn

Cons:
Sugaring is time consuming and can be messy or complicated for an inexperienced person to perform
How Long Does Body Sugaring Last?
For the best results, book your appointments when the hair is 1/8" long. At 1/8" the hair is in the beginning stage of growth and after extraction it will take longer to grow back.  As hair generally grows on a 6 week cycle, we recommend that all clients come in once every four weeks for the first three months to try and allow the hair to be on the same growth cycle. Repeat sugaring when the hair is in the Anagen (growth) phase can cause the hair follicles to eventually collapse, which can decrease or prevent future hair growth in some cases leading to permanent hair removal.

 WHAT ABOUT MANSCAPING???

A 2010 study showed that 95% of men routinely "manscape" to remove unwanted hair on their body. Sugaring offers a less painful and longer lasting alternative to waxing. It is more convenient than routine shaving and less expensive than laser hair removal.
